Place of Power
Gobo projection by Ester Sheynfeld

Though originally designed by a secret institute and classified for many years, the Sun Institute has recently become a popular destination for weekend visitors and curious adventurers. Its surreal architecture and beautiful location imbue it with a hypnotic quality, inevitably reminiscent of the novels of Philip K. Dick or the Strugatsky brothers. The solitary benches, built in the 1980s when the compound was off-limits and shrouded in secrecy, occupy the top terrace of the heliostatic field and surround a commemorative pillar that bears the inscription: “By the will of the Party, by the desire of the People, the Solar Complex will be built here”. Today, these benches highlight the unexpected public dimension of the Institute. Reproduced in Venice with a few material adaptations, they host an artwork by Ester Sheynfeld: a projection of the commemorative pillar’s text, serving as a gesture of contextualisation. In the artist’s words: “The installation Place of Power is silence in which a dream still resonates. It transforms the Institute into a metaphor for a journey, with its ascent, failures, silence and light. It is not just a location, but a point where the benches become markers of human memory. This is where questions arise: does a dream disappear with its associated ideology? Does desire pull us toward the individual or the collective? And do we leave behind emptiness, or the light that, one day, could help someone find their way?” The bench is constructed using RiceCyclingWall technology, developed by Ricehouse (Italy). This biomass-based alternative to concrete, made of dried pure rice husk with a natural hydraulic binder, has excellent insulation properties. Given the importance and abundance of rice in Uzbek culture, this technology can be easily adapted to the local context.
